Honda B-Series & K-Series Engine Swaps in Castro Valley

Welcome to Boulevard Auto. We bring high-performance Honda tuning and engine swap expertise right here to Castro Valley. Whether you're looking to breathe new life into a classic chassis with a B-Series Frankenstein build or modernize your track weapon with a K-Swap, our shop delivers precision assembly, reliable power, and clean installations.

The Boulevard Auto Specialty Components

A successful swap is only as good as the parts that connect it to the chassis. We specialize in sourcing and installing the exact components needed to make your swap seamless and reliable:

  • Wiring Harnesses: We utilize premium conversion harnesses tailored to your specific chassis. This ensures all sensors communicate flawlessly with your chosen engine management system, eliminating electrical gremlins and dashboard warning lights.

  • Mount Kits: Solid, vibration-managed engine positioning is critical. We use high-quality billet aluminum or steel mount kits with customized urethane bushings to secure the engine safely while maintaining proper axle alignment and hood clearance.

  • Drivetrain & Axles: We map out the exact custom swap axles required to mate your new B or K-series transmission to your existing hubs, ensuring they can handle the increased torque without binding.

  • Fuel & Cooling Systems: From tucking fuel lines and upgrading fuel pressure regulators to installing high-capacity aluminum half-radiators, we build out the supporting systems so your engine runs cool and fueled under heavy loads. For those looking to extract maximum safe power, we also specialize in configuring the necessary injectors and pumps to run E85 ethanol.

K-Series Swaps: K20 vs. K24

The K-Series is the gold standard for modern Honda performance, utilizing i-VTEC to deliver massive power bands. Choosing the right block dictates the character of your car.

The K20: High-Revving Precision

Found originally in vehicles like the RSX Type-S and Civic Si, the 2.0L K20 is a rev-happy, square engine (86mm bore x 86mm stroke). It thrives in the upper RPM ranges, safely spinning past 8,000 RPM. This is the purist's choice for a track-focused car where aggressive downshifts and screaming top-end power are the priority.

The K24: Torque and Daily Drivability

Sourced from heavier vehicles like the TSX or Accord, the 2.4L K24 boasts a longer stroke. This translates to significantly more low-end and midrange torque compared to the K20. For street-driven cars or heavier chassis, the K24 provides immediate punch without needing to wring out the RPMs.

The Ultimate Combo: For those seeking the absolute best of both worlds, we can build a K24 bottom end mated to a high-flowing K20 head — giving you the massive torque of the 2.4L with the superior breathing and VTEC engagement of the 2.0L.

The B-Series "Frankenstein" Build: LS/VTEC

Before the K-Series, the LS/VTEC was the king of the streets. This build mates a non-VTEC 1.8L block (the B18A/B from an Integra LS) with a high-flowing VTEC head (from a B16 or B18C).

The Nuances of the Build

You cannot simply bolt the head on and turn the key. The LS block was not designed to route high-pressure oil to the head to engage VTEC, and it lacks the necessary oil squirters to cool the pistons at high RPMs.

  • Oil Delivery: We install a specialized LS/VTEC conversion kit that taps into the engine's oil pressure sender port, routing a custom braided steel line directly to the VTEC head.

  • Dowel Pins: The alignment holes between the LS block and VTEC head are different sizes. We use step-dowel pins to perfectly center the head, preventing catastrophic head gasket failures.

  • Rod Bolts: Because the LS block was not meant to endure extreme RPMs, upgrading to heavy-duty rod bolts is mandatory to keep the rotating assembly safely intact.

California Legalities & BAR Referee Inspections

Tuning in California means navigating strict emissions regulations. It is absolutely vital to know where your build stands before turning a wrench.

California Smog-Legal Swaps

To legally register and drive your swapped Honda on California roads, the build must pass a Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Referee inspection. The golden rules for a legal swap are:

  1. Year Matching: The donor engine must be the same year or newer than the chassis receiving it.

  2. Complete Emissions Gear: You must install every single piece of emissions equipment from the donor engine's original vehicle (O2 sensors, catalytic converters, EVAP canisters, factory intake boxes).

  3. Vehicle Classification: You cannot put a light-truck engine (like a B20 from a CR-V) into a passenger car (like a Civic or Integra) and pass the referee.

Off-Road & Track-Only Builds

Certain builds, by their very definition, will never pass a BAR inspection.

The LS/VTEC Frankenstein is the prime example. Because a B18 block paired with a VTEC head never existed from the factory as an EPA/CARB-certified emissions configuration, the state of California will not recognize it as a legal engine change.

If you choose a non-compliant setup — such as an LS/VTEC, a JDM-only engine, or modifying emissions equipment for performance — the vehicle is strictly classified for Off-Road or Track Use Only.

  • Required Waiver: Boulevard Auto requires all clients commissioning non-BAR-compliant builds to sign a liability waiver acknowledging that the vehicle cannot legally be driven on public California highways and will not pass a state Smog Check.
